Who we are
Puzzel Samen is the puzzle site at puzzelsamen.nl. Where these terms say “we” or “us”, they mean Puzzel Samen. Questions, requests for permission and reports go to info@puzzelsamen.nl.
What you may do with our puzzles
For the puzzles that belong to Puzzel Samen itself — the generated puzzles, the built-in library, the booklet puzzles and the daily puzzle — you are hereby given permission, free of charge and without having to ask, to:
- play, print and download them for yourself, your household, your friends and your family;
- use them in education, at a club, a community center, a library or a care institution;
- use them commercially: in a newspaper, a magazine, a book or puzzle booklet, in an app or on a website, as a corporate gift or promotional material — also when payment is involved or advertisements are shown alongside;
- share the link with anyone you like.
This applies without any limit on print runs and without any fee. You do not need to ask us or tell us.
The one condition: state where the puzzle comes from
If you pass on one of our puzzles — on paper, on a screen, in any form at all — it must clearly state that it comes from puzzelsamen.nl. “Clearly” means: legible, next to the puzzle itself, and not tucked away in a colophon at the back or in small print that nobody sees.
Every PDF and every iPuz file you download here already carries that credit at the bottom:

If you leave that line in place, you are fine. If you set the puzzle yourself, “Puzzle from puzzelsamen.nl” next to the puzzle is enough, or the logo with the name beside it. The logo is already on every PDF: you may take it along in that form, but that is no permission to use our logo or our name for anything else — certainly not in a way that suggests we are behind your publication.
What is not allowed
The permission above concerns the puzzles. These three things are not covered by it:
- Passing on the puzzle without the credit. That is the only condition we set, and without that credit you have no license.
- Copying our word database. Extracting or re-using a substantial part of the words and clues — separately from the puzzles they appear in — is not allowed, and neither is repeatedly extracting small parts. Not even with credit. This includes building your own puzzle collection or word list from our clues, and training or fine-tuning a language model on them.
- Pretending it is yours, or that we are behind it. Presenting the puzzles as your own work is not allowed, and neither is using our name or our logo in a way that suggests we make or endorse your publication.

Puzzles by someone else
On Puzzel Samen you can also import, upload or make puzzles yourself. Those are not ours, and the terms above do not apply to them. What you may do with such a puzzle is up to its maker; we therefore do not add a license line of our own, at most the note that the file was exported via puzzelsamen.nl.
If you upload a puzzle yourself, it remains yours. You only give us the right to store it, show it and make it playable on Puzzel Samen for as long as it is here. In doing so, you declare that you are allowed to upload it — that you hold the rights to it yourself or have permission from whoever does.
What our rights rest on
The Puzzel Samen software is a work protected by copyright. The word database with its clues is moreover protected by a database right (the Dutch Databases Act): building, checking and rewriting those tens of thousands of clues is a substantial investment. Extracting or re-using a substantial part of that database is therefore not permitted, and neither is repeatedly extracting small parts.
Automated retrieval of puzzles or clues — with a script, a crawler or any other means — is only permitted to the extent that an ordinary search engine does so and robots.txt allows it. The free permission above concerns puzzles you download yourself, not emptying the library.
Use without credit
If you use our puzzles commercially without clearly crediting puzzelsamen.nl, you are using them without a license. You then forfeit an immediately payable penalty of € 250 per puzzle concerned, and € 100 for every day the use continues after we have pointed it out to you. If you add the credit after all, the daily penalty stops; meeting the condition after all is always the first way out.
For extracting or re-using a substantial part of the word database, a penalty of € 5,000 per infringement applies, and € 500 per day it continues. A credit does not help there: that database is not available in any case.
These penalties are due without us having to prove any damage and without a prior notice of default being required. They do not replace compensation: we additionally retain the right to claim the actual damage and to have the use stopped.
What you can expect from us
Puzzel Samen is free and is provided as it is. We do our best to keep the site working and the puzzles correct, but we cannot promise that the site is always available or that a puzzle never contains a mistake. Liability for damage caused by the use of the site is excluded, except in the case of intent or deliberate recklessness on our part.
Behavior in rooms and chat
In a room you play together with others. Insulting, threatening, spamming and sharing unlawful material are not allowed. We may suspend an account or remove a player from a room if that happens. What we keep in that case is set out in the privacy statement.
Law and court
These terms are governed by Dutch law. Disputes are submitted to the competent court in the Netherlands.
Changes
These terms may change. If something essential changes, the text gets a new version number and we ask you to agree again. Whatever you downloaded before then remains covered by the version that applied at the time.
