Getting the puzzle ready for you…
PuzzleSamen
With an account you’ll find your puzzles on every device, you can have 3 active at once and you can choose a profile photo — both once you confirm your email address. Without an account (and until you’ve confirmed) that’s 1 puzzle and no photo yet.
Your email address hasn’t been confirmed yet. You can puzzle as usual, but until then your account works as if you had none. Confirm it and you get: 3 active puzzles instead of 1, and a profile photo that other players see by your name. Only then can we send you a new password, too. Click the link in your inbox.

Nothing. Every puzzle is free and you simply play it in your browser. There is nothing to install and no trial period runs out.
No. You enter a name and you can start puzzling. An account is handy if you want more: your puzzles are then kept on every device, you can have three open at once, join the chat, add friends and collect medals.
Make a room and send the room code or the link, for example via WhatsApp. Anyone with the code joins in. That can be someone next to you on the sofa, but just as well someone on the other side of the country on their own phone, tablet or computer.
Yes. You fill in literally the same grid, so you see the others’ letters appear as they type. Every letter has a colored dot, so you know who filled it in.
Crosswords and Swedish puzzles, from small grids up to 21×21. Find one in the library, have one made in the size and difficulty you want, or bring your own puzzle as an iPuz or Across Lite file.
A word puzzle is a puzzle where you use clues to fill words into a grid, such as a crossword or a Swedish puzzle. On Puzzle Samen you play word puzzles free online, alone or together, from a small grid up to 21×21.
In a Swedish puzzle the clues are not in a list next to the grid but in the black squares themselves, with a little arrow showing which way the answer runs. That is how they appear in puzzle magazines too. Nearly every puzzle here can be played that way, and if you prefer a list of clues, one button switches the view. It is also known as a Swedish crossword, or in Britain as an arrowword. More about it — and a free Swedish puzzle to fill in right away — is on the puzzle type page.
Yes, free and without a download. In the puzzle generator you set the width and height (from 5×5 to 21×21), the difficulty, how many black squares it should have and how long the words may be. Press generate again and you get a different puzzle. Playing, sharing and printing as a PDF all work.
As many as you like; we set no limit. Two is the most common, but a whole family or a class can share a room too. Whoever made the room can set a maximum. Every player gets their own color, so you always see who filled in what.
Yes, and we thought about it. Puzzle Samen works in the browser on phone, tablet and computer. On a small screen the grid moves along as soon as the keyboard opens, and if you hold your finger on the grid for a moment, you get a magnifying glass for the small squares.
Filter by room name, puzzle title, author, difficulty, size, progress and occupancy. With “Join” you’re straight in.

Profile photo
Other players see your photo by your name above the puzzle and with your chat messages. The photo is scaled down on this device to a 256×256 square.
You can choose a profile photo once your email address is confirmed. Confirming also gets you 3 active puzzles instead of 1. Click the link in your inbox.
Name
This is how other players see you in the game and in the chat.
Email address
You log in with this. A new address has to be confirmed again through the link we send; until then your account counts as one without confirmation.
Preferred color
Your letters in the grid get this color if it’s still free in the room. If it’s taken, you get the next free color; in a room where you played before you keep the color you already had there. You can always change your color in the game.
Findable for friends
Friends find each other by full name or by email address. Switch this off and nobody can find you by your name any more; someone who already knows your email address can still invite you. Your friends never get to see your email address.
When someone mentions you or it’s your turn
In a room’s chat someone can mention your name with an @ in front. You always see that in the chat itself; switch this on and you also get a notification on your device when you’re not in the room at that moment. You get the same notification when it becomes your turn in a turn-based game while you’re not in the room. You can switch the notification off per room with the bell above the chat.

Your data
You can download everything we keep about you, and have your account deleted with everything in it. More about what we keep and why is in the privacy statement at the bottom of the page.
Yours
My rooms and puzzles
The puzzles you had made or uploaded. They stay yours, even without a room. Open "Rooms" to see where they’re being played now, or open a new room with one at the press of a button.
Rooms of yours that play a puzzle from the library or from someone else. Your own puzzles are above, with their rooms underneath.
Rooms tidy themselves up. If there’s no letter in it yet, or the puzzle is completely finished, the room disappears a quarter of an hour after the last player leaves. If you’re halfway, it stays for two weeks. With an account your rooms are kept until you throw them away yourself — a room that’s completely solved disappears a week later, because it’s done. Each room has a badge showing what applies to it.
Puzzles from the library that you saved. Open a new room with one whenever you like, or remove the star again.
Someone else’s rooms where you play along. These don’t count towards your limit, and only the owner can delete them.

Generate a Swedish puzzle
The server builds a puzzle nobody has seen yet, with the clues in the squares and arrows to the words. Set the options the way you like. Generating again gives yet another puzzle.
Import a puzzle
Choose a puzzle file (.ipuz or .puz) from your device, or paste a link to a puzzle on another site. The server fetches it, checks it and puts it in your library. Up to 40×40, and the Dutch IJ may sit in one square.
An iPuz file is just a text file (JSON) that you can edit with any text editor. Start with the example and adapt it:
dimensions — the width and height, from 3×3 to 40×40.puzzle — the grid: "#" is a block, 0 an empty letter square, and a number the number of a word that starts there.solution — the same rows, but with the letters. Every letter square needs a letter; the Dutch IJ in one square is written as "IJ".clues — the clues for those numbers, under Across and Down.Every row in puzzle and solution must have exactly as many squares as the width — that’s where handmade files most often go wrong. If something doesn’t fit, the message above says exactly what.
This is what a complete file looks like, the smallest possible (3×3, with KAT and SOK across and KAS and TAK down):
{
"version": "http://ipuz.org/v2",
"kind": ["http://ipuz.org/crossword#1"],
"title": "Mini",
"author": "Jouw naam",
"dimensions": { "width": 3, "height": 3 },
"block": "#",
"puzzle": [
[1, 0, 2],
[0, "#", 0],
[3, 0, 0]
],
"solution": [
["K", "A", "T"],
["A", "#", "A"],
["S", "O", "K"]
],
"clues": {
"Across": [
[1, "Huisdier dat miauwt"],
[3, "Kledingstuk voor aan je voet"]
],
"Down": [
[1, "Glazen huis voor planten"],
[2, "Zijarm van een boom"]
]
}
}Number 1 belongs to two words at once here: KAT (across) and KAS (down) both start in that square.
Adding a solution word (optional)
Want a few squares together to form a hidden word — the strip below the puzzle? Then add one extra field: puzzelsamen:solutionWord. In it you list the squares that take part, in the order in which their letters form the word. You don’t write the word itself: it’s already in solution at those positions. There can be 3 to 14 of them, each as { "row": row, "col": column }, counted from 0. In the 3×3 example above, the top row (K, A, T) together forms KAT:
"puzzelsamen:solutionWord": {
"label": "Oplossing",
"cells": [
{ "row": 0, "col": 0 },
{ "row": 0, "col": 1 },
{ "row": 0, "col": 2 }
]
}Put this field next to clues in the same file. Those three squares then get a small number (1, 2, 3) and their letters appear in the strip below the grid. In the example file (7×7) this same field gives the word BRAIN.

Personal
Settings
Your color
Others see this color by your name and the letters you fill in. Each color can only be used by one player at a time.
Download this puzzle to print or to use elsewhere. iPuz is an open format that may be used freely (also commercially) and can be imported here again.
The PDF is for printing and never contains the solution. The iPuz file does contain the solution, because otherwise the file would be no use later.
These settings apply to the whole room and only you, as the owner, can see them.
Works together with "only change your own letters": if someone is out of the game this long, everyone may change their letters again. With "never" their letters stay theirs (as the owner you can still always change them).
If you’re out of the game this long, the player who has been there longest and is online automatically becomes the owner. That way the room stays manageable if you drop out.
You can remove players from the list of names above the puzzle.
Personal settings only apply to you and are saved on this device.
