What is a Swedish puzzle?

In a Swedish puzzle the clue sits in the black square itself, with a little arrow pointing the way the answer runs. So there is no list of clues next to the grid, just like in the puzzle magazines at the checkout. You may also know it as a Swedish crossword or an arrowword.

They come in every size, from a small grid for a quick break to a big one for a long evening, in medium or hard. Rather have a list next to the grid after all? One button switches the view. It stays the same puzzle.

Swedish puzzle or regular crossword?

In a regular crossword the grid has numbers and the list of clues sits beside it, so your eyes keep going back and forth. In a Swedish puzzle they stay in the grid. On a phone that makes a real difference.

Otherwise they are much alike. The answers cross, and a letter you already have helps you with the word running through it. Both kinds are in the library, and what the puzzle generator makes is a Swedish puzzle.

How to start

  1. Pick a Swedish puzzle. Filter the free library by difficulty and size. Nothing there for you? Then let the puzzle generator make a new one.
  2. Play alone or together. Every puzzle has a room code. Keep it to yourself, or send it on and fill in the puzzle together.
  3. Rather on paper? Download the puzzle as a PDF and print it. The clues are in the squares then, just like in the magazines.

Handy on a small screen

The squares of a Swedish puzzle are small, and on a phone that can mean squinting. So you can zoom in and out, and the grid moves along as soon as the keyboard opens. Hold your finger on a square for a moment and a magnifying glass shows the clue underneath, nice and big. For the evening on the couch there is a dark mode.

Not sure about a word? Turn on pencil mode. Those letters are light gray and do not count until you confirm them.
