Getting the puzzle ready for you…

iPuz and Across Lite (.puz)

Import your own puzzle and fill it in together

Got a crossword as an iPuz or .puz file? Open it here in your browser and fill it in, alone or together with someone else. Nothing to install, and you can export it again too.

Which files work?

Puzzle Samen reads two formats. iPuz (.ipuz) is open and made of readable JSON; in that format you can also write a puzzle yourself. Across Lite (.puz) is the older format that most puzzle programs and puzzle sites use.

A numbered crossword works and so does a Swedish puzzle. If all the clues fit in the black squares, you play it as a Swedish puzzle; if not, the list goes next to the grid.

Three ways to import

  1. A file from your computer. Drag the .ipuz or .puz file into the import screen, or find it in your folders. Up to 5 MB per file.
  2. A direct link. If the file is online somewhere, the link is enough; the server fetches it.
  3. A puzzle page. From a Crosshare page the puzzle is taken out for you, so there is nothing to download.

Is there already a half-finished grid in the file (iPuz calls that saved)? Then you choose on import whether those letters come along. Handy if you started at home and want to finish it here together.

Writing an iPuz file yourself

Making a puzzle entirely by hand works in iPuz: one JSON file with the grid, the solution and the clues. The import screen has a collapsible block “Make an iPuz file yourself”, with a 7×7 example file to start from and the smallest working example (3×3) to copy. It also lists which fields are required and what each error message means.

No need to think up words yourself: the puzzle generator fills a grid with words and clues, in the difficulty you choose.

And back out: exporting

You can download every puzzle again. As iPuz, with the solution in it so you can use the file elsewhere, and if you like with the letters that are in it now. Or as a PDF: a page to print, with the clues in the squares and little arrows, just like in a puzzle magazine. The PDF never contains the solution, so you can safely print it for someone else.
