Make your own crossword puzzle

Let the puzzle generator build a crossword or Swedish puzzle for you. You pick the size, the difficulty and the word length. Free, and you can play the puzzle, send it on or print it right away.

A puzzle without thinking up words yourself

The puzzle generator puts a complete grid together, with the words and the clues. You type nothing and download nothing: set a few choices and within a second there is a puzzle nobody has seen before. Click again for a different one.

The clues come from our own word list and never give the answer away. The word itself is never in the clue, and you will not see “plural of …”. The same word never appears twice in one puzzle either.

What you choose

  • Size. From a small grid for a quick break to a big one for a long evening. Width and height are set separately.
  • Difficulty. Medium or hard. That is about how familiar the words are and how straightforward the clues.
  • How full the grid is. Many black squares make the puzzle airy; few black squares make it denser and trickier.
  • Word length. Mostly short words, mostly long ones, or a mix.

What comes out is a Swedish puzzle: the clues sit in the black squares with a little arrow to the word. Rather have the familiar list beside it? One button in the game switches it.

How to make your own puzzle

  1. Open the puzzle picker. The home page has “Choose a puzzle”, and in it is the tab “Make a puzzle”.
  2. Set it up the way you like and click “Generate puzzle”. You see a preview of the grid right away.
  3. Play, share or print. Get going yourself, send the room code to fill it in together, or download it as a PDF for on paper.

Or bring your own puzzle

Already made a puzzle in another program? Then you can import it. Puzzle Samen reads iPuz files and Across Lite files (.puz), and can also fetch a puzzle from a direct link. If the file already has letters in it, you choose whether they come along.

Writing a puzzle entirely by hand works in the open iPuz format. The import screen has a 7×7 example file to start from, with the explanation next to it.
